This compilation is designed as a journey through time to the beginnings of Hip-Hop culture in Hamburg and includes over 100 mostly unreleased songs and skits. The triple vinyl is accompanied by a 96-page booklet that tells of the early years of Hip Hop, Rap and DJing in Hamburg.

The team behind the triple vinyl includes, in addition to the four editors of EINE STADT WIRD BUNT (A CITY TURNS COLOURFUL) , Oliver Nebel, Frank Petering, Mirko Reisser and Andreas Timm, three proven experts on the German hip-hop scene. Oliver Herbst, once the DJ of the Hip-Hop band City Nord, now runs the record label Platin Mukke, on which the record is released, and was able to reconnect with many old contacts in the course of the research. Also on board: Dennis Kraus, who was the editor-in-chief of the hip-hop magazine Backspin for many years, and music journalist and presenter Falk Schacht.

The team spent over two years researching the project. They contacted bands, rappers, DJs and producers who were active in and around Hamburg in the 1980s and 1990s. They sifted through and archived countless hours of radio shows, tapes, demo DATs and live recordings, and conducted interviews with Hip-Hop pioneers from the Hanseatic city.

The records are therefore accompanied by a 96-page, lavishly illustrated booklet in vinyl format, which uses extensively researched texts to trace how the new music style slowly found a home in Hamburg from the mid-1980s onwards.

Like the book of the same name and the museum exhibition, the compilation EINE STADT WIRD BUNT also takes a look behind the scenes of a young subculture – and at the same time tells exciting chapters of music, technology and city history from the hip-hop stronghold on the Elbe.
